A British-South African film has won the illustrious People's Choice award at the Toronto Film Festival.

Tsotsi, directed by British-born director Gavin Hood, is about a Johannesburg gangster, and also won best film at the Edinburgh festival last month.

The winner of the People's Choice award often fares well at the Oscars, with previous winners including Life Is Beautiful, American Beauty and Chariots Of Fire.

Just last year the award went to Hotel Rwanda, and saw leading actors Don Cheadle and Sophie Okonedo receive Oscar nominations.

An Australian film, Look Both Ways, won the Discovery award that is voted for by film journalists.

This year's festival attracted many celebrities over the ten days, including Helena Bonham Carter, Annette Bening and Pierce Brosnan.

In total, the festival showed 335 films from 52 countries, including 109 world premieres, drawing to a close with a screening of Edison, a crime thriller starring Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey and Justin Timberlake.
