Piranhas coming back to bite

5 stars out of 5.0
The director behind The Scorpion King and The Mask is now turning his attentions to a remake of the horror-comedy Piranha.

Chuck Russell, who also directed The Blob, Eraser and A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, will bring the 1978 film up to date.

The original Piranha was directed by Joe Dante (Gremlins, The Howling, Innerspace) and told the story of genetically altered piranhas that are released into a stream with bloody consequences.

The new version will involve an ancient school of piranhas being woken by an earthquake in Arizona.

Other remakes that will soon be hitting our screen include a new version of Superman, now with Brandon Routh taking the role made famous by Christopher Reeve along with Kevin Spacey taking Gene Hackman's place as Lex Luthor.

Blake Edwards' classic comedy The Pink Panther, which originally starred Peter Sellers and David Niven, is also returning to the big screen Steve Martin taking the role of bumbling detective Jacques Clouseau.
