Crash lands top OscarCrash won the coveted best film Oscar, having gained ground against favourite Brokeback Mountain in the build-up to Hollywood's night of nights. Brokeback Mountain, the tale of two gay cowboys, was hotly tipped to dominate this year's Oscar podium, given that it had prevailed at both the Golden Globes and Baftas. And the film did net Taiwanese director Ang Lee (Hulk, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) a second best director Oscar, but failed to live up to its pre-ceremony hype, taking just three of the eight awards it was nominated for. The best actor awards were handed to Philip Seymour Hoffman (Along Came Polly, Magnolia) for his hugely acclaimed portrayal of effete writer Truman Capote, and to Reese Witherspoon (Legally Blonde, Sweet Home Alabama) for her all-singing all-dancing role as June Carter Cash in the Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line. British star Rachel Weisz (About A Boy, The Mummy) led the British Oscar charge with a best supporting actress award for her role in The Constant Gardener, while silver-haired heartthrob George Clooney (Ocean's Eleven, Intolerable Cruelty) took the best supporting actor award with Syriana. Cheese loving animated pairing Wallace and Gromit landed British animation guru Nick Park (Chicken Run) yet more silverware, last night's win making it a fourth best animated feature Oscar.
