Harry Potter DVD sales into fantasy figures

Opening US sales for Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire have gone through the roof, without the aid of a broomstick, Associated Press has reported.

The latest adventure in JK Rowling's fantasy series scored a sales figure of five million on its first day of release. The high figures could mean the film is on the way to beating Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban's 10.2 million copies.

The figure includes all sales of the film's four-disc gift pack, two-disc special edition and single-disc version, as well as rental copies. Four-disc packs cost punters $73.92 (£42.89), while single-discs can be picked up for $28.98 (£16.80).

Although the Goblet Of Fire's first day sales are jaw dropping, they have not broken records. Over eight million copies of Pixar's 2003 hit Finding Nemo were bought on its first day of sale.

At the cinema Harry Potter's latest romp took $288 million in the US, as well as $600 million overseas.

The next film in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter And The Order Of The Pheonix, is still in production and will be released next year.
