Sony wins in box office battle

Box office takings for 2006 were up from 2005 in the US, with Sony Pictures bringing in the most money for the year, it has emerged.

According to Empire, cinema receipts totalled $9.13 billion (£4.7 billion) during the twelve-month period, which saw the release of a number of blockbusters and independent movies alike.

Sony had a $1.69 billion share of the market, producing films such as book adaptation The Da Vinci Code, new James Bond adventure Casino Royale and Will Ferrell's racing comedy, Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby.

Animated movie Cars and swashbuckling sequel Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest helped Disney earn second place, while Fox followed, releasing a host of hits including X-Men 3: The Last Stand.

Other much-publicised releases in 2006 included biopics Walk The Line and Ray, the controversial comedy Borat and animated sequel Ice Age 2: The Meltdown.
