Stephen King series 'may be directed by Abrams'

The Dark Tower, a series of seven books written by Stephen King, may be developed into a film or television series and directed by JJ Abrams, it has emerged.

According to IGN, Abrams - who created Alias and Lost - could turn his hand to adapting the books, which tell the story of Roland Deschain, who embarks on a journey to find the Dark Tower, a legendary building that may hold the key to the meaning of life.

Abrams recently directed Mission: Impossible 3 and, if he agrees to direct the King story, he will not be the first to adapt the horror writer's work for the cinema screen.

Numerous films and mini-series have been created based on the author's novels, including The Shining, where Jack Nicholson is haunted in a deserted hotel out in the Colorado mountains.

Other films such as Misery and Carrie are also based on King's books, where as other non-horror novels by the writer were developed into movies such as The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and Stand By Me.
