Following news that Nicole Kidman is expecting a baby, Kate Winslet has agreed to replace her in a forthcoming World War II drama.

World Entertainment News Network reported today that Winslet, who was last seen in festive romcom The Holiday, will star in The Reader, an adaptation of a popular novel.

Kidman was originally due to star opposite Ralph Fiennes in the movie, but pulled out after learning she was pregnant by husband Keith Urban.

She is currently appearing on the big screen in another adaptation, The Golden Compass.

The Reader is to be directed by Stephen Daldry, who many might know as the man behind 2002's The Hours and 2000's Billy Elliott.

Meanwhile, Ocean's Thirteen and Out of Sight actor George Clooney was asked about Kidman's pregnancy as he attended Monday's Critics Choice Awards in Los Angeles.

"I'm thrilled for her," he told People magazine. "She'll be great … a perfect mother."
