4 stars out of 5.0
With a closely guarded plot and mysterious marketing campaign, the makers of new movie Cloverfield seemed to do a good job of making sure the film had maximum impact during its opening weekend.

Cloverfield took some $41 million (£21 million) in box office receipts over the past three days in the US, as audiences raced to see what kind of monster movie it really was.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the total is a record for this weekend and executives are expecting the movie to reach nearly $50 million by the end of Monday.

Produced by Lost and Alias creator JJ Abrams, Cloverfield tells the story of a city overtaken by a huge and deadly monster.

The film tells the story from the perspective of a group of young partygoers who find themselves caught in the middle of the mayhem.

It is scheduled for release in the UK on February 1st.
