Elm Street gets a recurring nightmare

3 stars out of 5.0
A Nightmare On Elm Street, the horror franchise that spawned dream-haunting, bladed-glove-toting serial killer Freddie Krueger, is set to receive the remake treatment, according to reports in Hollywood.

Industry bible Variety reports that New Line, who were behind the 1984 original, have appointed Platinum Dunes to handle Freddie's makeover. Platinum Dunes is headed by the trio of Brad Fuller, Andrew Form and Michael Bay, the man behind Pearl Harbour and Transformers.

Variety says they are working on a script for the project, which will be based on the events of the original film.

A Nightmare On Elm Street generated five sequels and the 2003 spin-off Freddy Vs Jason, which brought Krueger face-to-hockey mask with another prolific screen teen killer, Jason Voorhees of The Friday 13th films.

And don't be too surprised if the two cross paths again - Platinum Dunes, which also developed the 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, is also producing a new Friday 13th movie for 2009.
