Indie stars gear up for Spirit Awards

4 stars out of 5.0
Before the blockbusters take their bow at the Oscars, independent cinema gets its chance to shine at Saturday's Independent Spirit Awards.

Among the films leading this year's field is Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There, starring Cate Blanchett, Christian Bale and the late Heath Ledger, which picked up four nods including Best Feature and Best Supporting Female for Blanchett.

Also in the running is Ivan Reitman's crossover hit Juno. The film, a quirky tale of dealing with teenage pregnancy, is up for Best Feature, Best Director, Best Female Lead for Ellen Page and Best First Screenplay for Diablo Cody.

Other nominees include Don Cheadle (Ocean's Eleven, Crash) and Phillip Seymour Hoffman (In Cold Blood, Charlie Wilson's War) who are both up for Best Male Lead for their respective roles in Talk to Me and The Savages.

In the Best Female Lead category, Mr & Mrs Smith star Angelia Jolie is nominated for A Mighty Heart, while Sienna Miller picks up a nod for her role in Interview, which also starred Steve Buscemi.

The Diving Bell And The Butterfly, A Mighty Heart and Paranoid Park complete the Best Feature nominations.
