Horton a hit at US box office

Horton Hears a Who!, the film about an elephant protecting the tiny community of Whoville, has proved a big hit with audiences across the pond, hitting the top of the box office chart after its opening weekend, new figures show.

According to the boffins Nielsen, the animated flick - which features the vocal talents of Jim Carrey, Steve Carell and Arrested Development's Will Arnett - raked in a whopping $45 million (£22.46 million) at US cinemas.

It succeeds pre-historic adventure epic 10,000 BC at the top, which dropped to number two ahead of another new entry, Never Back Down.

Bad Boy Martin Lawrence is at number four with comedy College Road Trip, while conspiracy thriller Vantage Point is number five (with a bullet).

Crime caper The Bank Job is at six, while The Long Good Friday's Bob Hoskins pops up in futuristic action thriller Doomsday at seven.

Will Ferrell and Woody Harrelson's comedy Semi-Pro gets dunked at eight, while Eric Bana, Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman whip up some intrigue at nine in historical drama The Other Boleyn Girl.

Fantasy adventure The Spiderwick Chronicles marks its fifth week on the chart at number ten.

Horton Hears a Who! opens in the UK on March 21st.
