21 twists to the top of box office chart

Gambling drama 21 has knocked animated hit Horton Hears A Who! from the top spot at the US box office, according to the latest figures from Nielsen.

The film, which stars Kevin Spacey, Laurence Fishburne and Kate Bosworth, is based on the true story of six MIT students who took several Las Vegas casinos to the cleaners after studying card counting techniques. It also won big at US cinemas, taking $23.7 million (£11.93 million) on its opening weekend.

That was enough to knock Horton Hears A Who! into second. Another new entry, comedy spoof Superhero Movie starring Leslie Nielsen and Brent Spiner of Star Trek: The Next Generation, was third.

Meet The Browns occupied fourth on the chart, followed by Drillbit Taylor with Owen Wilson, which opened in the UK on March 28th.

Horror remake Shutter, starring John Hensley (Nip/Tuck) and James Kyson Lee (Heroes), came it at six, while former number one 10,000 BC fell to seven.

Iraq war drama Stop-Loss, which stars Ryan Phillipe (Cruel Intentions) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Lookout), debuted at eight, with Martin Lawrence vehicle College Road Trip at nine.

Brit-flick The Bank Job celebrated its fourth week on the chart at number ten.
