Star Trek film 'not for hardcore Trekkies'

Trekkies everywhere may have to set their faces to stunned after the man behind the new Star Trek movie, Lost creator JJ Abrams, reportedly said he is not making the film just for them.

Digital Spy says the writer, director and producer - whose hits include handycam monster movie Cloverfield and asteroid adventure Armageddon - told the Associated Press that he wants the new movie to appeal to as wide an audience as possible.

"The whole point was to try to make this movie for fans of movies, not fans of Star Trek, necessarily," he said.

He added that although there is a dedicated Trekkie on the film's writing staff, it was impossible to second-guess the famously meticulous fanbase.

"As soon as you start to guess what you think they are going to want to see, you're in trouble," he commented.

The studio behind the film, Paramount, recently moved its release back from the summer to May 2009 in order to maximise its box office impact.

The new movie, the 11th Star Trek motion picture, will star Shaun Of The Dead's Simon Pegg as Scottie, Vantage Point's Zoe Saldana as Uhura and Heroes' Zachary Quinto as Spock.

Rising star Chris Pine will take on the role of interplanetary ladies' man Captain James T Kirk.
