Carter named best of British

2 stars out of 5.0
Michael Caine's tough-as-nails gangster flick Get Carter has been named the greatest British film ever in a new poll.

ShortList magazine named the 1971 story of murder and revenge as its number one ahead of 1979 cult classic Quadrophenia and another Michael Caine classic, The Italian Job.

Also named in the top ten were 1987 luvvies-on-the-lash comedy Withnail & I, Bob Hoskins' own gangster flick The Long Good Friday and Daniel Craig's debut as 007, Casino Royale.

Seventh place on the list goes to iconic 1990s flick Trainspotting, which is followed by 1966's Blow-Up, post-war classic The Third Man and Stanley Kubrick's ultra-violent tragi-comedy A Clockwork Orange.

Other films in the top 20 list include Peter O'Toole epic Lawrence Of Arabia, psychological horror Don't Look Now, comedy classic Monty Python And The Holy Grail and Simon Pegg's rom-zom-com Shaun Of The Dead.

The list is rounded out by Christopher Lee's Dracula, subversive slice of surrealism If…, The Crying Game, Scum, This Is England and creepy horror The Wicker Man.
