Hancock tops box office

Will Smith's latest film Hancock has gone straight to the top of the North American box office.

It marks the fifth time that Smith has scored a number one movie during the Independence Day holiday in the US.

Hancock - which tells the story of an alcoholic superhero who has fallen out of favour with the public - raked in $66 million (£33 million) over the weekend.

It knocked last week's number one, Disney animation WALL-E, into second place on the chart.

According to Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office analysts Media By Numbers, a new Smith movie is guaranteed to pull in crowds

"Hancock did not get great reviews, but it doesn't matter. A guy like Will Smith is arguably the most bankable star in the world," he remarked.

According to the Metro, Will Smith and Tom Cruise are planning a new film project together.
