Lucas: LeBeouf won't play Indy

George Lucas appears to have gone back on an earlier suggestion that Shia LeBeouf may take over from Harrison Ford in the next Indiana Jones movie

A scene in Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull saw LeBeouf's character almost get his hands on his father's famous fedora hat, which appeared to suggest he may take over the role when Indy retired.

Speaking at the film's premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, Lucas did confirm that the fifth film would focus on Mutt Williams – LeBeouf's character – rather than Dr Henry Jones.

However, the director seems to have changed his mind, telling MTV Movies: "Indiana Jones is Indiana Jones. Harrison Ford is Indiana Jones.

"If it was Mutt Williams it would be Mutt Williams and the Search for Elvis or something."

Lucas did maintain that there would definitely be a follow-up to the latest Indy movie, perhaps unsurprising as it has been one of the year's biggest hits so far.
