Holy Grail of British films

Monty Python and the Holy Grail has topped a poll of the nation's favourite films.

The surreal comedy romped home ahead of Oscar winners like Shakespeare in Love, Gandhi, and Chariots of Fire.

In total the Python's 1975 classic polled a quarter of the vote, beating more recent films like Love Actually, and box office hits like Four Weddings and a Funeral.

There was more success for Cleese and co. with The Life Of Brian coming in seventh.

Controversial ultra-violence fest A Clockwork Orange came in second, it was withdrawn in 1973 and re-released in 2000.

Trainspotting was third, and Oscar winner Lawrence of Arabia was fourth.

The results were based on more than 7,000 responses.
