Burn After Reading takes UK number one

The Coen brothers' latest film Burn After Reading has gone straight to the top of the UK and Ireland box office chart, almost doubling the takings of its closest rival.

A black comedy starring Brad Pitt, George Clooney and John Malcovich, the film pulled in some £2.04 million during its first three days in cinemas.

Shia LaBeouf's action vehicle Eagle Eye was its closest competitor in second place, with earnings of £1.1 million.

Animated comedy Igor made its debut at number three, with the likes of John Cusack, Eddie Izzard and Steve Buscemi lending their voices to the story of a hunchbacked lab assistant who dreams of becoming a mad scientist.

Last week's number one The House Bunny, which stars Anna Faris as a Playboy bunny kicked out of the mansion on her 27th birthday, slipped back to fourth place.

The top five was completed by Keifer Sutherland's supernatural chiller Mirrors, with takings of £585,350.
