Kidman ready for Invasion

Nicole Kidman is to star in a new version of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers.

Simply entitled Invasion, it will be the latest take on the 1956 sci-fi classic, which tells the story of a strange epidemic that alters human behaviour.

Kidman is set to play the role of the psychiatrist who discovers that the causes of the epidemic are extra terrestrial, and she must fight to protect her son who is the only one who can stop the alien invasion.

The film will be directed by Olivier Hirschbiegel, who was nominated for an Oscar for his controversial film, Downfall, about Adolf Hitler's last days.

The Matrix producer Joel Silver believes that the actress who has starred in The Interpreter, Moulin Rouge and The Hours will bring an extra dimension to a film of this sort.

"Invasion gives Nicole an opportunity to bring her depth and range to the kind of gritty action role that we haven't see her play before," Silver said.

Traditionally, the role Kidman will be playing is a male one, so Hirschbiegel clearly wants to add his own slant on the film rather than produce a straight remake of the original.

Invasion is targeted for release in 2006, and filming is scheduled to begin in the autumn.
