Christian Bale's turn as a resistance leader in Terminator Salvation has blasted the sci-fi film to the top of the box office.

The futuristic film, about a group of survivors battling killer machines, took in a staggering £7 million in its first three days of release.

Terminator Salvation, the fourth film in the action franchise, claimed nearly triple the earnings of the chart's second place movie, Night at the Museum: Battle of The Smithsonian.

Director Sam Raimi's horror movie Drag Me To Hell was pushed down a notch to number three, while Angels And Demons and Star Trek rounded out the top five respectively.
