Local Hero takes location plaudits

A film that was set in Pennan, Aberdeenshire, has come top of a poll to find the best use of a film location in Britain.

Local Hero, made in 1983, was a Bafta-winning comedy directed by Bill Forsyth that starred Burt Lancaster, Denis Lawson, Peter Capaldi and Jenny Seagrove.

The poll of 2,000 film critics and journalists was carried out for the Film Distributors' Association.

Lord Puttnam, who produced Local Hero, said: "I am delighted but not all that surprised that Local Hero has proved so enduringly popular, as this poll demonstrates.

"It's a film of which I remain immensely proud and I'm thrilled that it's continuing to give great pleasure to people across the UK."

Second place in the poll was taken by The Full Monty, which stars Robert Carlyle, and its portrayal of Sheffield.

This was followed by another Carlyle movie, Trainspotting, which also featured Ewan McGregor and Jonny Lee Miller, set in Edinburgh.

Other films that made it in to the top ten were An American Werewolf In London, The French Lieutenant's Woman and Brassed Off.
