New Harry Potter film a 12A

Cinemagoers under the age of 12 who wish to watch the new Harry Potter film will have to be accompanied by an adult.

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire has been classified as a 12A rather than a PG certificate due to scenes of "moderate fantasy violence, threat and horror".

The fourth of the Harry Potter films, it is the first of the series to be given such a rating as the story turns darker.

The film has been directed by Mike Newell, whose previous credits include Four Weddings And A Funeral, Donnie Brasco, Pushing Tin and Mona Lisa Smile.

It will feature much of the cast from Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban, such as Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, Michael Gambon and Gary Oldman, as well as appearances from Ralph Fiennes and Miranda Richardson.

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) said: "Younger viewers could be frightened by some of the more intense scenes. At 12A we allow moderate level violence, but without focus on injuries or blood."
