Staunton and Swank to go to school

After fighting it out for an Oscar last year Imelda Staunton and Hilary Swank are to star together.

Staunton, whose role in Mike Leigh's Vera Drake got her the nomination, will star alongside the double Oscar winner Swank, who won her second golden statuette in Clint Eastwood's boxing drama Million Dollar Baby, in the high school drama Freedom Writers.

The film will tell the tale of a young teacher played by Swank, who also starred in Boys Don't Cry, The Gift and The Core, who inspires her class in a school where gang violence is rife.

Brit Staunton first came to fame in a series of TV appearances but she moved into films starring in Peter's Friends, Much Ado About Nothing, Sense And Sensibility and more recently Nanny McPhee.

Freedom Writers is based on the book by Erin Gruwell and will also star Scott Glenn, of The Silence Of The Lambs, and R'n'B singer Mario.
