The Graduate named top soundtrack

Simon and Garfunkel's music to the film The Graduate has been named the top soundtrack in movie history.

The soundtrack for Mike Nichols' (Closer, Catch 22) film, which starred Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft, included the songs Mrs Robinson, The Sound Of Silence and Scarborough Fair.

Readers of Giant magazine gave second place to the 1984 film Purple Rain that featured Prince's musical and acting talents.

Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, with tracks by Al Green and Dusty Springfield, took third place followed by the reggae movie The Harder They Come, with Jimmy Cliff.

Rushmore, which included songs by Donavan, The Rolling Stones and The Kinks, beat The Beatles' film Help! to fifth place.

Giant's chart of soundtrack greats also included Danny Boyle's Trainspotting, Lost In Translation (directed by Sofia Coppola), and Saturday Night Fever, which featured the hip-swinging moves of John Travolta to the music of the Bee Gees.

The chart was rounded off by Bernard Hermann's soundtrack to North By Northwest, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Hermann, considered one of the greatest film score composers, also provided music for Taxi Driver, Psycho, Fahrenheit 451 and many more.
