Gaslight to shine againThe story of a dastardly husband who tries to drive his wife insane was made into a film twice in the 1940s. A first British version, which starred Anton Walbrook (The Red Shoes, 49th Parallel) and Diana Wynyard (Tom Brown's Schooldays, An Ideal Husband), was followed by a US version that earned its star Ingrid Bergman her first Oscar. The third Gaslight will be directed by Brit Joe Wright, who also made this year's Pride & Prejudice starring Keira Knightley, Matthew Macfadyen and Brenda Blethyn. Fellow Brit Abi Morgan, who wrote the TV series Sex Traffic, will pen the new script but the action will now be set in California. Gaslight's producer Paula Weinstein (The Perfect Storm, The Fabulous Baker Boys) told Variety: "Joe wanted to explore what goes on here [in America] with the money and the drive for it. "Abi is a great writer of character, and we wanted someone who'd bring a fresh take to the California setting. They will go back to the original play as a source as well."
