Christmas comes early for Disney movie

A Christmas Carol has soared to the top of the U.S. box office with an opening weekend haul of £19.375 million in North America.

The Disney hit - starring Jim Carrey as an animated Ebenezer Scrooge - toppled Michael Jackson's This Is It from the top spot.

The documentary secured second place with £8.75 million, followed by George Clooney's The Men Who Stare At Goats with £8.3 million.

U.F.O. thriller Fourth Kind and horror Paranormal Activity round out the top five.
