Adam Sandler to make 9/11 movie

4 stars out of 5.0
Following fast on the heels of United 93 and firmly signalling that the Hollywood taboo surrounding the events of 9/11 in New York is a thing of the past, Adam Sandler is to make a film based on the events of 2001.

The star of such sensitive and hard hitting films as Big Daddy and Happy Gilmore looks set on changing direction and have ago at the serious stuff.

The plot of Empty City will revolve around Charlie Fineman (Sandler) who after losing his family in the World Trade Centre attacks finds that rekindling an old friendship with former college roommate (Don Cheadle) is the best way to heal the wounds.

"So it's about friendship, I guess," Sandler told ComingSoon.

"It's just about a man who's been through a terrible thing - he lost his family in 9/11 - and he has a hard time just living life and just being in the moment. He doesn't want to know about life. He tries to pretend he never had a family.

"He can only deal with life by thinking about stuff from his past and growing up and he bumps into... Cheadle plays, we went to dental school together, and my character hasn't spoken to anybody in five years and Cheadle makes him feel comfortable"

The film is currently in production and as well as Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda, Crash) is also set to feature Liv Tyler (Armageddon, One Night At McCool's) and Saffron Burrows (Troy, Gangster Number One).
