4 stars out of 5.0

To celebrate the Blu-ray release of Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor, out now, we’ve got five copies to give away to some lucky LOVEFiLM members.

The Spectacular and true story of a man living through extraordinary changes, The Last Emperor chronicles the Life of the last Emperor of China, Pu-Yi (John lone). Born in the caged atmosphere of The Forbidden City, he becomes absolute monarch of his nation aged 3. From here a tumultuous journey begins taking him from being the object of worship to over half a billion people, through forced abdication, to his decline and dissolute lifestyle, his exploitation by the Japanese invaders and finally to an obscure end as gardener of the Botanical gardens in Peking. A poignant, sweeping saga it provides ornate costumes, exotic locations and cinematography and a central character with affront row view of many of the key events of the twentieth century. It also features standout performances from Peter O’Toole as Pu-Yi’s Scottish tutor and Joan Chen as Wan Jung, the Emperor’s wife.

Winner of 9 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and best Cinematography, the film has been fully restored for it’s blu-ray presentation and is displayed in 2.0 format at the director’s personal request.
