Children of Men tops box office charts

Children of Men is sitting at the top of the UK box office, despite suggestions the film's glory will be short lived.

The film, starring Clive Owen and Julianne Moore, is based on the novel by PD James and directed by acclaimed Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban director, Alfonso Cuaron.

In number two spot, The Queen, based on the English monarch, is sitting comfortably.

Will Ferrell’s comedy, Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby, dropped from the coveted number one place to third.

The trend of more dramatic films attracting higher audience numbers than comedies usually marks the end of summer blockbusters and eases cinema goers into the acclaimed, Oscar worthy films.

This year's popular summer comedies which have all fared well at the box office include Owen Wilson's You, Me and Dupree, Ant Bully and Talladega Nights.

The eagerly anticipated ‘award movies’, which will be released over the next new months in the run up to February's Oscars, include Oliver Stone’s September 11th epic World Trade Centre and Martin Scorsese's The Departed.
