De Niro 'to appear in Extras finale'

Screen legend Robert De Niro could possibly appear in the final episode of hit BBC comedy Extras, according to reports.

The Stage cited a source who said that the star of Taxi Driver and The Godfather II could show up as a surprise guest in the show, which stars Ricky Gervais and Ashley Jensen.

Although there has been no official confirmation or denial, the source told the Stage that there was a "very big surprise" and that it had been a "very well-kept secret".

The Ricky Gervais show has so far attracted a stellar list of guest stars including Patrick Stewart, David Bowie, Daniel Radcliffe and Chris Martin.

Sir Ian McKellen, Robert Lindsay, Ross Kemp and Kate Winslet have also appeared on the comedy show, which has run for two series.

Ricky Gervais has not ruled out the possibility of occasional one-off episodes, but has said that this episode will mark the end of his hit show.
