Crash star Howard joins cast of Iron Man

Terrence Howard is the latest addition to Jon Favreau's film Iron Man, which stars Robert Downey Jr. in the title role.

Howard, who featured in Oscar-winning ensemble piece Crash, will play Jim Rhodes – best friend of iron-suit-wearing superhero Tony Stark.

Although Rhodes begins as a friend, the Marvel comic book sees him morph into the menacing War Machine, who turns against Stark.

However, it is widely expected that his turn to the dark side will be saved for a sequel, as the first film is rumoured to pit Iron Man against villain the Mandarin. Production is scheduled to begin in January 2007 and, according to imdb.com, is due for release sometime in 2008.

Howard was Oscar-nominated this year for his turn in Hustle And Flow and also starred in fictional biopic Get Rich or Die Tryin', which was rapper 50 Cent's acting debut.

He also starred in Four Brothers, a story of loyalty and vengeance from Boyz 'n' the Hood director John Singleton.
