Stay in and rent a classic

Although there are a number of new DVD releases each week, those looking to rent a classic could use the Internet Movie Database's "top 250 movies" list for inspiration.

The Godfather and The Shawshank Redemption are joint first in the chart, which is compiled by ratings given by the site's users to each film.

Each user can rate a film from one to ten and both films at number one scored an average of 9.1 with 179,609 votes.

The Godfather: Part II followed at number three, ahead of The Lord Of The Rings: Return of the King and Casablanca.

If starting with the top ten is more of a conventional approach, you could start at a random number – such as Memento at number 26 or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind at 38.

Further down the list sees The Deer Hunter at 131 and Platoon at number 135, with a score of eight points.

Alternatively, renters can look forward to upcoming DVD releases such as Miami Vice and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.
