Cate Blanchett puts movie career on hold

Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett is to take up a position as co-artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company, a position that she says will leave her three months per year to concentrate on other projects.

Blanchett said that her acceptance of the position, which she will take on with her playwright husband, was "an absolutely firm commitment and it is not one that Andrew [her husband] nor myself have made lightly".

The actress, who won a best supporting actress Oscar in 2005 for her role in The Aviator, has appeared in a number of films to date, including The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Talented Mr. Ripley and all three Lord of the Rings installments.

In 1998, she appeared as the title role in Elizabeth, which also featured Geoffrey Rush, Christopher Eccelston and Joseph Fiennes. She is also soon to appear with Brad Pitt in the forthcoming film Babel.
