New Mel Gibson project nears release

2 stars out of 5.0
The new movie written and directed by Mel Gibson is set to open next weekend in the US and critics believe Apocalypto may not be affected by recent controversy surrounding the star.

Gibson was recently arrested for drink-driving, but Nikki Finke of L.A Weekly said that fans of his previous project, The Passion Of The Christ, would "reward him with their movie-going loyalty," reports Studio Briefing.

Apocalypto tells the story of the Maya kingdom's impending decline and the human sacrifices offered by its rulers in order to save it. And it could be in a similar vein to other historical epics directed by the star, including Braveheart and The Passion of the Christ.

But Gibson has also spent much of his career acting in big-budget action films such as Lethal Weapon and Ransom, while additionally lending his talents to comedies including Chicken Run and What Women Want.
