Denzel Washington voted America's favourite star

Training Day actor Denzel Washington has been named as America's favourite movie star, after finishing first in a poll to find the nation's top actor or actress.

The poll, conducted by Harris, saw Tom Hanks knocked off the top spot after two years of being the country's favourite, reports Studio Briefing.

Falling to second place, Hanks, who recently starred in The Da Vinci Code, finished above John Wayne and Clint Eastwood in third and fourth place respectively.

The Pursuit Of Happyness star Will Smith tied with Julia Roberts for fifth place, with Johnny Depp in seventh place and Mel Gibson, who directed this month's cinema release, Apocalypto, in eighth.

George Clooney, whose varied television and film career includes hits such as Out of Sight and Ocean's Eleven, was placed ninth, while ex-Indiana Jones star Harrison Ford rounded off the chart at number ten.
