Cult film director Darren Aronofsky is to direct a psychological thriller entitled Black Swan, it has emerged.

According to Empire, the movie will centre on the relationship between a dancer and their rival, with the project being the seventh film on Aronofsky's CV.

He previously wrote and directed Pi, which is a thriller filmed in black and white with an astonishing soundtrack and a complex plot.

The movie follows Maximillian Cohen, who believes he can find a pattern in the stock market yet is being chased by a mysterious religious sect and aggressive financial companies.

Following Pi, Aronofsky took the helm of Requiem for a Dream, but is likely to hit the headlines next week with the cinema release of The Fountain, a movie which has so far divided critics and audiences alike.

Starring Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz, the film is a combination of science fiction, romance and action, telling the love story of a man and his terminally-ill wife throughout various time periods and dimensions.
