Departed sequel in the pipework

A sequel to hit gangster movie The Departed is currently in development, according to reports.

The film will focus on Mark Wahlberg's character and will be written by William Monahan who penned the original movie, says the Hollywood Reporter.

Though the movie would need final approval from director Martin Scorcese before going into production, it is rumoured to feature a new character played by Scorcese staple Robert de Niro.

The method actor has taken up more comedic roles of late, including Meet The Parents with Ben Stiller and the sequel Meet The Fockers, which starred Dustin Hoffman.

Pundits believe The Departed will pick up a number of gongs during the awards season, with Wahlberg securing a best supporting actor nomination.

His co-stars in the form of Leonardo di Caprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson have also earned plaudits for their turns in the film.
