David Lynch returns with top marks

4 stars out of 5.0
Fans of David Lynch may be excited to find that his latest cinematic offering, Inland Empire, has been awarded five stars out of five by the latest issue of Empire magazine.

Starring Laura Dern, the film is described by reviewer Damon Wise as "a dazzling and exquisitely original riddle", telling the story of an actress who believes her latest project is cursed.

But Lynch followers will know that his films often dispel the notion of traditional narrative in favour of fragmented and quirky stories such as in Blue Velvet or Mulholland Drive.

His body of work includes original but unconventionally told stories, such as those in Dune, Wild At Heart and Eraserhead, while he also co-created seminal cult television series Twin Peaks.

Debuting in 1990, the programme featured Kyle MacLachlan as Special Agent Dale Cooper, who relocates to a sleepy Washington village in order to solve a murder mystery.

However, as the town's secrets get deeper and deeper, Cooper finds himself embroiled in a world which is not quite as it seems.
