Film festival opened by Al GoreA number of environmentally-themed short films and features are to be screened at the event, which included premieres of United 93 and Mission: Impossible III last year. The Tribeca Film Festival was originally established in 2002, as a response to the terrorist attacks on New York in 2001. Robert De Niro was responsible for the idea and construction of the event, which is aimed at promoting the city as a filmmaking centre and helping lower Manhattan to recover from the events of September 11th. In addition to movie screenings, the festival also features discussion panels where industry professionals gather to talk about a particular matter. This year is set to see a debate on horror and violence in films, and will include Halloween director John Carpenter among others.
