David Fincher: Real Zodiac was scary

4 stars out of 5.0
The period when self-named serial killer Zodiac terrorised San Francisco was "very scary", director David Fincher has said.

Fincher, who previously made Seven, Fight Club and Alien 3, grew up in the area during the 1960s and 70s, and told the Guardian it was impossible to be unaffected by the murderer's actions.

"Growing up around Zodiac warped your little mind," Fincher remarked in an interview about his new film, which tells the story of three men hunting the killer - who remains unidentified to this day.

Zodiac stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr and Mark Ruffalo, and is released today in the UK.

However, Fincher was keen to point out that it bears little similarity to his previous serial killer-themed movie, Seven.

"It's not that Seven thing. We already did that," he explained.

In the early years of his career, Fincher was known as a music video director, having made promos for artists such as Aerosmith and Madonna.
