Apocalypto and Pan's Labyrinth sweep Imagens

A yearly awards ceremony aimed at encouraging and recognising the portrayal of Latinos in the media took place last night and saw a number of films take home multiple prizes.

The 22nd Annual Imagen Awards included wins for fantastical fairytale Pan's Labyrinth, which was given best picture and best actress for Ivana Baquero, while it also took the prize for best director.

Mel Gibson's epic Apocalypto won plaudits for best supporting actress and actor, while Kuno Becker received the gong for best actor following his portrayal of an up-and-coming football star in Goal.

Other winners included Ugly Betty, which was named best primetime TV programme. Stars America Ferrera and Ana Ortiz were given the awards for best TV actress and supporting actress respectively.

Best children's TV programme was decided as Dora the Explorer, a show about a little Latina who solves problems and journeys to different places with her friend Boots.
