Ay Carumba! Simpsons trounce Transformers

4 stars out of 5.0
In a week featuring the release of two of this summer's biggest blockbusters, The Simpsons Movie has come out on top and beaten Transformers to be the number one film in the UK.

Generating a total of over £13.6 million in ticket sales, the Springfield family debuted in the top spot, followed by the family action flick with around £8.7 million, according to AC Nielsen's chart.

Harry Potter and the Order of The Phoenix was shifted into third, while comedy musical Hairspray dropped to four.

Shrek the Third and Die Hard 4.0 occupied places five and six, with this week's only other new entry - indie drama SherryBaby - reaching eighth place.

The film stars Maggie Gyllenhaal as a newly-released convict who attempts to restart her life and make amends with her estranged daughter.
