The return of the living doll

4 stars out of 5.0
Serial killing demon doll Chucky could be set for a return to the big screen with some old friends at the helm, it has emerged.

Speaking to horror website Shock Till You Drop, producer David Kirschner said that he is looking to install long-time writing collaborator on the franchise Don Mancini as director for the project.

Kirschner, himself the producer of the two most recent sequels - Bride Of Chucky and Seed Of Chucky - said that the new film would be a remake of the original devil doll feature, Child's Play.

"We're going back and remaking the first one and even pushing it further and making a very terrifying version of the first one, which is pretty scary as it is," he told the website.

It is thought that the Child's Play remake will avoid the easy option of computer generated effects and will instead adopt the same kind of animatronics techniques that have brought Chucky to life through the previous five films.

"It'll be an animatronic doll like we do all of them, but animatronics have grown from when we did the first one 20 years ago," Kirschner added.

The original Child's Play movie told the tale of Charles Lee Ray, a serial killer and part-time voodoo enthusiast who transfers his soul into the body of a doll before embarking on a franchise-friendly murderous rampage.

Chucky's first outing made for a creepy and sinister tale, however, as with many horror series, the sequels headed more into comedy and self-parody with the killer doll eventually finding a wife and child.
