American Gangster beats Beowulf to #1

Ridley Scott's newest effort American Gangster has beaten Beowulf to the top of the UK box office chart.

For the weekend beginning November 16th, American Gangster took approximately £2.56 million while Beowulf debuted with around £2.19 million, according to AC Nielsen data.

The two new entries spent their first week ahead of Ratatouille, the animated tale of a rat who is a rather talented chef.

Stardust, starring Sienna Miller and Ricky Gervais, occupied fourth place, ahead of Jessica Alba in Good Luck Chuck and Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth: The Golden Age.

Meanwhile, the only other new entry this week came in the form of Brick Lane, which debuted at number ten.

The film is an adaptation of the bestselling novel by Monica Ali and tells the story of a young girl forced into an arranged marriage.
