Emile Hirsch discusses Speed Racer

3 stars out of 5.0
Up and coming actor Emile Hirsch has given Empire Online some titbits of information about the new movie Speed Racer, an adaptation of the 1960s anime series.

The film, which tells the story of a young racing driver trying hard to stay honest in a corrupt business, also stars Christina Ricci and Susan Sarandon, and is directed by the legendary Wachowski brothers - the team behind The Matrix.

According to Hirsch, production of Speed Racer used "green screen" technology and absolutely no sets - meaning actors had to visualise what would later be digitally inserted as their surroundings.

"There were no sets, just us and the green background," he said. "I haven't seen anything of it finished yet, there was a lot of trust [in the Wachowskis] involved. It's going to be crazy."

Aside from his latest role in Speed Racer, Hirsch can currently be seen on the big screen in Into The Wild, a true story directed by Sean Penn.

He also starred in 2006's Alpha Dog and 2004's The Girl Next Door.
