The Golden Compass tops US chart

3 stars out of 5.0
Fantasy adventure story The Golden Compass debuted at the top of the US box office this week, taking $25.8 million (£12.58 million) in box office receipts.

According to data from the Hollywood Reporter, the movie knocked family comedy Enchanted off the top spot for the week ending December 9th.

This Christmas followed in third place, clocking up a total gross of $42.7 million after three weeks on release, while Fred Claus went up two places to four and Beowulf dropped to the fifth spot.

Aside from The Golden Compass, which stars Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, there were no other new entries in the top ten.

Hitman, August Rush and Awake all remained steady players in the end of year cinema offerings, with No Country for Old Men and The Mist rounding off the chart.

Meanwhile, UK film-lovers have a lot to look forward to over the festive season. Besides the DVD release of The Bourne Ultimatum - which is surely a must for any discerning movie fan - upcoming big-screen titles include Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium and Bee Movie.
