The Golden Compass stays at #1

Fantasy epic The Golden Compass has stayed at the top of the UK box office chart for another week, suggesting that the film might be just as popular as the books on which it is based.

Starring Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman, The Golden Compass has now taken more than £12.2 million in ticket sales, according to AC Nielsen.

It kept new entries Enchanted and Bee Movie from the top spot, in addition to pushing Fred Claus into fourth place.

Another two new entries - Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium and We Own The Night - debuted in fifth and sixth place respectively, while Hitman occupied number seven and American Gangster stayed inside the chart at number eight.

Beowulf and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford rounded off the top ten, although next Friday sees the release of St Trinian's which could be popular over the festive season and give the box office a shake-up.
