Sweeney Todd tops UK box office

4 stars out of 5.0
The latest Tim Burton creation, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street, has topped the UK box office in its first week of release.

According to AC Nielsen data, the macabre story of a murderous hairdresser played by Johnny Depp took over £4.5 million upon its debut on the big screen.

It pushed sci-fi horror AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem into second place, while slushy romcom PS I Love You occupied number three.

The only other new entry this week was In The Valley Of Elah, starring Tommy Lee Jones and Charlize Theron. The drama was written by Paul Haggis, who previously penned Oscar-winning ensemble success Crash.

Alongside the new entries were family-friendly hits such as Enchanted and Alvin and the Chipmunks, although it is likely that the chart will see the entry of Cloverfield next week, which has so far thrilled US audiences.
