Ghost still holds Swayze over Brit lovers

Ghost, the 1990 tear-jerker starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg, has topped a Valentine's poll of the nation's favourite love films.

The film, which sees Swayze's character's, well, ghost attempt to contact his girlfriend after his death during a botched mugging, was a box office smash and the scene featuring the pottery wheel and Unchained Melody is among the most famous in recent cinema.

Such is Ghost's cultural impact that it has been spoofed by everyone from Leslie Nielsen in the Naked Gun films to TV's Family Guy.

The film, which won Goldberg an Oscar as best supporting actress, beat another member of the class of 1990, Pretty Woman, to the top spot.

Box office monster Titanic, which won 11 Oscars in 1997, came in at number three, leaving Brit-flick Love Actually in its wake at four.

Another Richard Curtis-penned film, Four Weddings And A Funeral, made the number five spot, edging out cinema classics The Sound of Music, Gone with the Wind, Casablanca and Doctor Zhivago.

An Officer And A Gentleman, with Richard Gere and Debra Winger, rounded out the poll, which was conducted by insurer RIAS.
