10,000 BC a mammoth hit at US box office

3 stars out of 5.0
Prehistoric adventure 10,000 BC has stomped to the top of the American box office on its first weekend at the flicks, new figures from Nielsen show.

The film, which stars Practical Magic alum Camilla Belle and Cliff Curtis of Die Hard 4.0, took a mammoth (boom, boom) $35.73 million at cinemas since its opening on Friday - more than double the takings of second place movie, Martin Lawrence comedy College Road Trip.

Multi-thread presidential assassination thriller Vantage Point was third, while Will Ferrell's basketball chucklefest Semi-Pro dropped to four.

Jason Statham's right royal blag The Bank Job made its debut at five, ahead of children's fantasy The Spiderwick Chronicles, which has now spent four weeks in the top ten.

Samuel L Jackson and Hayden Christensen's teleportation thriller Jumper became the highest-grossing film on the chart at number eight, while Step 2 The Streets continues its fancy footwork at nine.

The top ten is completed by adventure rom-com Fool's Gold, which features Kate Hudson, Matthew McConaughey, Ray Winstone and the legendary Donald Sutherland, the star of cinema classics such as MASH, Kelly's Heroes and Don't Look Now.
